LOS ANGELES METROPOLITAN AIRPORT

VAN NUYS, CA

LOS ANGELES "METRO" AT VAN NUYS

Los Angeles Metro

Los Angeles Metropolitan Airport in Van Nuys was called "Metro" by Golden Age aviators (photo, right, from AOPA Pilot, September, 2004).

Metro was dedicated December 17, 1928, twenty-five years to the day after the Wright brother's first flights.

By 1929 two hangars were open, one of which still exists. As the Great Depression deepened, the film industry helped keep Metro afloat by filming "Test Pilot" and "Lost Horizons" there.

Metro's control tower starred in the motion picture "Casablanca" with Humphrey Bogart.
